The Missing Matter

Next Wave #3

A DRAMATIC NEW SERIES OF BOOKS AT THE CUTTING EDGE WHERE SCIENCE MEETS SCIENCE FICTION

The future is already here…

Computers, the space shuttle, biogenetics—what was once the domain of science fiction is now business as usual. Developments in science and technology are propelling us forward so fast that only a few dare to speculate where we might be tomorrow.

Take a step toward our future in outer space with two of the leading minds in science fiction and science fact as you explore the possibilities of the “dark matter” beyond our solar system.

The combined mass of the Milky Way provides less than half of the gravity necessary to keep our galaxy together. There must be some unseen or “missing” matter somewhere providing the difference. What is this mysterious “dark matter”?

Thomas R. McDonough, acclaimed author of THE ARCHITECTS OF HYPERSPACE, sends a scientific research ship to the edges of space—and dimensions beyond—when its crew ventures too close to “dark matter” phenomenon.

Renowned space scientist Wallace H. Tucker explores the nature of “dark matter” and draws startling new conclusions about its place in the universe.

Edited by Isaac Asimov.

About the Author

Thomas R. McDonough is an author and lecturer in engineering at Caltech, perhaps best known for his nonfiction and for serving as the coordinator of the SETI programme of the Planetary Society. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Listening for Life in the Cosmos (1987) argues the case for seeking out First Contact with other races in the Galaxy; that there have been no successes to report over the past quarter of a century may account for the fact he has not revised this text, despite advances in technology. Much of his earlier work was also nonfiction, beginning with "They're Trying to Tell Us Something" for Analog in March and April 1969, which likewise concerned SETI matters.
